My Goalkeeping System

Chapter 336 Final Whistle

"Mateo's still going and he has a clear sight of the goal, could this be it?"

Mateo quickly shifted the ball a little further into the box and knowing that there was no other way, Filip quickly closed up on him with the idea of sweeping the ball off his feet just before he would be able to do anything with it, but he was unaware that that was just the moment the winger was waiting for.

He waited for the goalkeeper to get a little closer to him before he quickly lobbed the ball over him.

"Mateo's gone for the lob!"

Filip ended up almost crashing into him as the ball flew directly into the goalpost.

"Mateo gets it into the net!"

As soon as the referee blew his whistle to confirm that goal, the winger took off to the sidelines.

It wasn't his style to go crazy after scoring goals but he just had to do it for this one because that was a very wonderful goal, and not just that, it was also a very important goal.

He raced toward the sidelines and leaped up, and just as his feet touched the ground, he screamed at the top of his lungs before Minino got to him and placed both of his hands on his shoulder to thrust up on his back.

The home fans were exploding with celebration and Norman couldn't help but smile.

"He always comes up at the last moments," Dave muttered with a bright smile on his face.

'If things go well for us in all competitions this season, he'll surely get a spot in next year's Ballon d'Or rankings.'

<True, but he'll have no chance of winning it though>

'I know, getting a spot is all he needs.'

<And what about you? You might also be able to get a spot for yourself>

'I'm not sure about that given that the goalkeepers in the top five leagues don't even get that much attention, but I'll be glad if it happens.'

FC Basel players had devastated looks on their faces after witnessing that brilliant effort from Mateo, and now they were behind, the away goal advantage wasn't going to work in their favor now as Unique FC now had more goals on aggregate.

The players on the bench had to join the celebration, and they just couldn't get their hands off their wonder kid and that was only fair given the fact that he just restored their hopes of going through to the group stage.

From the start of the season, it was already established that Mateo was the most important player on the team, and today, he just showed why he was the most important player on the team.

The match was about to resume as Hans was standing over the ball now waiting for the referee's whistle and as soon as he heard it, he quickly pushed the ball to Felix.

"The game has resumed now and we have just five minutes left in the game, there's also going to be a couple of added minutes but will FC Basel be able to escape from this with the little time they have?" Jim expressed.

"Letting their guard down around Mateo was a big mistake, they tried quite well to stop him but it just wasn't enough and in the end, the youngster ended up getting what he wanted." Steve articulated. "It would be best for Unique FC to switch to a more defensive style of play at this moment because if FC Basel manages to grab a goal at this crucial moment, the game would be over for them and Mateo's effort would have been in vain."

Just like Steve said, Norman had given his cue to switch to defensive play, but that didn't mean they weren't going to attack with the opportunities they got, he had everything planned and after that goal from Mateo, he was pretty sure that things were going his way.

Felix tried to lob the ball over to Henrique after receiving it from Bennet, but Roland jumped up before the winger could do anything and sent the ball flying to Aima who came on to replace Pirlo a few minutes ago.

"Nice defending from Roland to prevent that ball from getting to Henrique," Jim commented.

The match had just hit the ninetieth minute now, and as soon as that happened, the official with the board raised it to show that there was going to be eight minutes of added time.

"Eight minutes? That's quite a lot." Jim said.

"Yeah, but it is understandable."

Mateo was with the ball now, and just before Felix could pull him into a corner, he quickly pushed the ball to Edward who came on to replace Ferran at the eighty-seventh minute.

Edward passed the ball to Merino who ran forward a bit before returning the ball to Edward who quickly sent it flying over to Fredinho who was entering the box now, but he seemed to have overhit a bit as Filip quickly rushed toward the ball before anyone else could get to it and caught it.

"Filip steps up to make sure that doesn't become a problem," Jim said.

Right at the sixth minute of added time, FC Basel won a free kick right on the edge of Unique FC's box, there were contemplations about it being a penalty and it sure looked like it happened inside the box, but after confirming with VAR, the referee was sure that it happened right at the edge of the box.

Henrique was standing over the ball now with his gaze on Unique FC's four-man wall waiting for the referee to blow his whistle.

"This is a really good chance, if he scores this right now, it's game over for Unique FC," Steve said.

'This is very dangerous if that ball goes past it's game over for us.' Dave said subconsciously as he adjusted his gloves.

<Are you doubting your skills now?>

'No, that's not it, I know I can stop it, but anything can happen.'

<I know anything can happen, but you should be glad that it wasn't a penalty>

After making sure that everything was ready, the referee blew his whistle, and now it was time to see how things were going to turn out.

After hearing the whistle, Henrique quickly shifted his gaze to the ball as he slowly took three steps backward, and as soon as he stopped moving backward, he quickly closed up on the ball and sent it flying toward the goalpost.

"Will he be able to pull it off? Henrique!"

The ball was sent flying toward the top right-hand side of the goalpost but Dave was equal to the task as he dived toward the ball at the right time and knocked it down with both of his hands.

"Nice save from Dave but it's not over yet."

The rebound fell directly toward Reto who quickly fired the ball toward the bottom left side of the goalpost but Ronald quickly got in position right in time to block the ball with his legs.

"Oh, my goodness that could have gone in!"

The ball was sent toward Adolf who quickly shifted the ball to Mateo with his back heel.

Nobody needed to tell the winger to send that ball flying far away from their goal area.

"Oh, my! That was so...so close for FC Basel!"

As soon as that ball was sent out by Mateo, the referee blew his whistle thrice to bring the match to an end.

"There's the final whistle, the match has finally come to an end now and we can see the host players raising their hands with bright smiles on their faces and the fans cheering them louder, FC Basel could have been the ones celebrating now but Unique FC fought hard to prevent that last chance from being a goal or as I always like to say, it was not meant to be." Jim articulated.
